BIOGRAPHY
Italo-Swiss soprano Amelia Scicolone was born in Grenchen, Switzerland, and studied voice at the University of Music in Basel, where she graduated with honors. In 2022, she received the Music Award from the Canton of Solothurn in recognition of her accomplishments and remarkable career. In 2019, she received the Kurt and Barbara Alten Award and has twice been a scholarship recipient of the Migros Culture Percentage, as well as a prize-winner of the Friedl Wald Foundation and the Basel Orchestra Recognition Prize.
Her first engagement led her to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden while still a student, where she debuted as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Amelia has already performed roles such as Le Feu in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (Theater Basel), Blonde in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Opéra de Lausanne, Stadttheater Klagenfurt and Nationaltheater Mannheim), Jemmy in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell (Grand Théâtre de Genève and Saarländisches Staatstheater), Ascagne in Berlioz’ Les Troyens and La Prise de Troie (Grand Théâtre de Genève), Pagagena in Die Zauberflöte (Grand Théâtre de Genève), Nanetta in Verdi’s Falstaff (Genève), Mi in Lehár’s Das Land des Lächelns (Klagenfurt), Olympia in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Julia in Künneke’ Der Vetter aus Dingsda (Tioler Landestheater), among others.
As member of the ensemble of Nationaltheater Mannheim, the coloratura soprano sung Marzelline in Beethoven’s Fidelio, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Sophie in Massenet’s Werther, Eurydice in Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers, Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Drusilla in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Aricie in Rameau’s Hyppolite et Aricie and more.
Amelia started her 2022-23 season singing Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, at the Staatstheater Nurnberg. Then, she came back to Mannheim, where she performed as Blonde, Wogllinde in Der Ring an eine Abend, Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Zémire in Grétry’s Zémire et Azor and Angelo in Händel’s The Resurrection.
In the season 2023-24, she sang Gretel at the Luzerner Theater; Adele in J. Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus and Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen, in Mannheim; the solo part in Mozart’s Requiem, at the Festival Musique des Lumières in Biel; and the solo part in Bruckner’s Mass no. 1 in D minor, at the Theater Orchester Biel-Solothurn. Closing her season, Amelia made an important role debut at the Nationaltheater Mannheim: Zerbinetta in R. Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos.
Highlights of Amelia Scicolone’s 2024-25 season include her role debut as Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, at the Crans Montana Classics (Switzerland). In Mannheim, she will perform as Fiordispina in Cimarosa’s Impresario in Angustie, Gretel, Sopransolo in Schreker’s Der Schmied von Gent and Adele in Die Fledermaus, among others.
Amelia Scicolone has collaborated with conductors such as Jesús López-Cobos, Charles Dutoit, Alessandro De Marchi, Alexander Soddy and Fabio Biondi. Directors she has worked with include Calixto Bieito, Aron Stiehl, David Pountney, Jürgen Rose, Tom Ryser and Frank Hilbrich. The orchestras she has performed with include the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Basel Sinfonietta, Accademia Montis Regalis, Basel Chamber Orchestra and Festival Strings Lucerne.
