BIOGRAPHY
Armaz Darashvili was born in 1982 in Rustavi, Georgia. He graduated his bachelor and master degrees from Tbilisi State Conservatoire, with Prof. Lamara Goglichidze and Prof. Nodar Andguladze. During his student years he participated in numerous vocal music concerts. In 2005, the tenor received the Paata Burchuladze Scholarship. Between 2005 and 2007, he worked at Vaso Abashidze Music and Drama Theatre, where he performed Eduardo in Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio. In 2006, Darashvili sang Malkhaz in Zakaria Paliashvili’s Daisi, at the Batumi Music Centre.
In 2007, he won the First Prize in Baku, at the Byulbyul International Vocalists Competition. The same year, he participated in the Anniversary Concert of Byulbyul at the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow. In 2008, he became a diploma-winner of Julián Gayarre International Singing Competition (Pamplona, Spain). In 2010, he won the Lado Ataneli Vocal Competition.
Since 2008, Armaz Darashvili has been regularly invited at the Tbilisi State Opera & Ballet, where he debuted as Malkhaz in Daisi. Later, he interpreted the roles of Kote in Victor Dolidze’s Keto and Kote, Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata, Abesalom in Paliashvili’s Abesalom and Eteri and the tenor part in Verdi’s Requiem. In 2009, he participated at the International Festival Autumn Tbilisi, singing the Mozart’s Coronation Mass. In the 2010-11 season, Armaz Darashvili had numerous performances abroad on both opera houses and festivals: the title role in Stiffelio, at the Verdi Festival, with performances at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna; Heinrich in Wagner's Tanhäuser, at the Reggio Emilia Opera Theatre; L. Dallapiccola's Il Prigioniero at the Teatro Pavaratti-Freni di Modena; Liszt’s Stabat Mater and Faust Symphony, at the Teatro Manzoni di Bologna; Nino Rota’s Napoli Milionaria at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; and O. Respighi’s La Primavera at the Warsaw Grand Hall. In 2012, he appeared as Ismaele in Verdi’s Nabucco and Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, at the Tbilisi State Opera. In 2013, Darashvili toured with Tbilisi State Opera in Estonia (Saaremaa), where he performed the Duca di Mantova in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Later, in Paris, he sang in Rossini's Stabat Mater at the Cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides.
Since 2013, Darashvili has also been regularly invited at the Batumi Music Centre, where he debuted as Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. In 2014, in this same theatre, he sang Don José in Bizet’s Carmen. In Tbilisi, he performed as Gustavo in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and Alfredo. In 2015, he sang again Don José at Teatro Verdi di Firenze and Tbilisi State Opera. In the same year, he performed Edgardo in Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor and Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème, in Tbilisi. In 2016, Armaz Darashvili interpreted the part of Abesalom in the premiere of Abesalom and Eteri, re-opening the renovated opera theatre. In 2017, the Georgian tenor has performed as Duca in Rigoletto, at the M. Balanchivadze Kutaisi State Academic Theatre; Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Cavaradossi in Tosca, at the Tbilisi State Opera.
His warm and colored timbre of tenore drammatico gives to Darashvili possibilities to perform powerful and complex roles such as Don Alvaro in Verdi's La Forza del Destino, who he sang in 2021, at the Tbilisi State Opera. During the 2021-22 season, he sang the tenor part in Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Don José, Turriddu, Alfredo, Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth, Abesalom Paliashvili's Abesalom and Eteri and Ismaele in Verdi's Nabucco. In 2022, the tenor participated in the Gino Marinuzzi International Opera Song Competition and became a finalist.
Among his next engagements, Armaz Darashvili will debute at the Estonian National Opera Tallin, on the roles of Lohengrin and Mario Cavaradossi. At the Dubai Opera, he will sing again Alfredo in La Traviata, in co-production of Tbilisi State Opera.
