BIOGRAPHY

Croatian bass-baritone Benjamin Šuran is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most versatile young voices of his generation. He captured international attention with his high-profile debut as Zio Yakusidé in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (2025), performing under the baton of Kirill Petrenko at both the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

His 2026 season is highlighted by major appearances at the Bregenzer Festspiele, where he performs the role of Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and the solo bass part in Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Other notable recent engagements include the dual roles of Erster Nazarener and Erster Soldat in Strauss’ Salome at Teatro Massimo di Palermo (2025), and Sagrestano in Tosca at the Slovenian National Opera in Maribor (2024–2025).

A frequent guest at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Šuran has built an extensive repertoire featuring roles such as Colline (La Bohème), the title role in Papandopulo’s Amphytrion, Frank (Die Fledermaus), Dottore Grenvil/Marchese (La Traviata), and Fiorello (Il Barbiere di Siviglia). Equally at home on the concert stage, he has appeared as a soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Zagreb Philharmonic, Handel’s The Messiah at Müpa Budapest, and Israel in Egypt with the Croatian Baroque Ensemble. Looking toward the future, Šuran is set to join the prestigious International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich for the 2026/27 season.

REVIEWS

"If we expect comic reactions and rather caricatural vanity from Šjor Bep Pegula/General Kekoragiopoulos, then we can fully trust Benjamin Šurjan and his pleasant bass-baritone voice."
Zdenka Weber - Klasika.hr

"Benjamin Šuran's Frank was of course somewhat less energetic than Bilušić's, but still likably drunk, and more caring in his singing."
Karlo Radečić - Opera.hr

"Baritone Benjamin Šuran, a third-year student, was entrusted with the title role of Amphitryon and performed in all three performances. The trust placed in him is a clear sign of the young singer's singing and acting maturity, whose voice is powerful and balanced with a rich dynamic spectrum. Šuran is excellent at moving around the stage and convincingly portrays the demanding role."
Zdenka Weber - Klasika.hr
