DOMINIKA ŠKRABALOVÁ
mezzo-soprano

BIOGRAPHY
Mezzosoprano Dominika Škrabalová was a choral child. She grew up in Permoník Choir Karviná (Czech Republic). Later, the Male Chamber Choir Permoník won several golden prizes under her leadership, including the Grand Prix at the musical competition in Georgian Tbilisi. At the same time she studied singing at the University of Ostrava with Eliška Pappová, a singer of a great renomé in the former Czechoslovakia. The young mezzosoprano also attended courses led by the significant vocal coach Margreet Honig from Netherlands, which evolved to a fruitful cooperation.
In November 2021 she won the Second Prize at the Antonín Dvořák's International Singing Competition (Czech Republic) where she also gained 4 special prizes. Among them the Prize of Jarmila Novotná for the most succesful Czech participant in a women’s category and the Prize of Antonín Dvořák for the best performance of his aria – Dominika sang Ježibaba from his Rusalka.
Dominika has developed a strong relationship to a music of the 20th century and hence she is regularly trying to get audiences acquainted with it (e.g. pieces of B. Martinů, P. Eben, V. Kaprálová, B. Britten and others). At the concerts she usually cooperates with the excellent Czech pianist Lukáš Michel. She sang alongside the Janáček Chamber Orchestra (Rutter’s Magnificat, Arnesen’s Magnificat or Vivaldi’s Gloria in D). She also performed with the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava thanks to winning the competition Jeunesses Musicales. She is about to make her debut in Stefaniensaal in Graz (Austria) under the baton of maestro Alois J. Hochstrasser in Beethoven’s Messe C-dur in November 2022.
Dominika Škrabalová cooperates with the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava. So far, she created several roles there, including Contralto in Johnson’s Four Note Opera, Carlotta in Salieri’s La Scuola de’ Gelosi and Rosette in Massenet’s Manon. In the 2022-23 season, she will sing Háta in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Venere in Monteverdi's Il Ballo delle Ingrate. Dominika also sang Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, at the Silesian Theater in Opava. After her performance at the competition in Karlovy Vary mentioned above, she was offered to sing the Third Sprite in Dvořák’s Rusalka, at the Prague National Opera.
