BIOGRAPHY
​
Ukrainian baritone Yuriy Hadzetskyy studied at the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy and the Opera Academy Young Talent Development Programme of Teatr Wielki (Polish National Opera) in Warsaw. He has also taken part in several prestigious training programmes including the Voice Residency of the Académie du Festival d ’Aix en-Provence (2019), the Accademia Rossiniana “Alberto Zedda” (2021) of Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, and he was awarded a scholarship to participate in the Lied Academy of the International Song Centre Heidelberg, under the artistic direction of Thomas Hampson. In 2023, he was a participant in Carnegie Hall’s elite SongStudio Program under the leadership of world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming.
Hadzetskyy is also a laureate of several high-profile singing competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition (Brussels), Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition (Dublin), International Stanislaw Moniuszko Vocal Competition (Warsaw) and International Art Song Competition (Stuttgart).
As a former member of the renowned International Opera Studio of Opernhaus Zürich, he appeared as Graf Dominik in Strauss’ Arabella, in a production by Robert Carsen, under the baton of Fabio Luisi; Geisterkind in Turnage’s Coraline; Ratgeber/Wildschwein/Riese in Mitterer‘s Das Tapfere Schneiderlein; and Procolo in Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma, among others. Most recently, as guest, Hadzetskyy returned to Zurich Opera as Mercutio in Ted Huffman’s new production of Roméo et Juliette by Gounod, conducted by Roberto Forés Veses, being acclaimed for his “wonderfully supple voice” (Oper Aktuell, 2023).
In the 2024/25 season, Yuriy Hadzetskyy is singing Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan Tutte, Ping in Puccini’s Turandot, Harlequin and Musiklehrer in Jean-Claude Berutti’s production of Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and Belcore in Oliver Klöter’s production of L’Elisir d’Amore by Donizetti, at the Theater Trier. In the same season, he made his Japanese debut with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner’s Mass No.3, under the musical direction of Henrik Schaefer.
Highlights of Y. Hadzedstkyy’s 2023/24 season include Mercutio at the Opernhaus Zürich; Albert in Massenet’s Werther at the Bregenzer Opernfestspiele; Moralès in Bizet’s Carmen, at the Theater Trier; and Marco in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, at the Deutsches National Theater und Staatskapelle Weimar.
Previously, Hadzetskyy sang the roles of Second Apprentice in Andreas Kriegenburg’s production of Wozzeck by Alban Berg, at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía of Valencia, led by James Gaffigan; the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, at the Lviv National Opera; Conte Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, at the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar; Achilla in Händel’s Giulio Cesare, at the Grand Theatre of PoznaÅ„; Dandini in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, at the Wroclaw Opera; and Barone di Trombonok in Il Viaggio a Reims, at the Rossini Opera Festival.
