BIOGRAPHY

Chilean countertenor José Andrés Muñoz has established himself as one of the most prominent emerging voices in the Baroque repertoire on the national scene. He began his vocal training in private lessons with renowned mezzo-soprano Evelyn Ramírez, deepening his stylistic and technical approach to the interpretation of early music. He has received a scholarship from the Williams Foundation (Argentina) for an internship at Juventus Lyrica alongside mezzo-soprano Adriana Mastrángelo, and since 2022 has received support from Corporación de Amigos del Municipal de Santiago.

His affinity with Baroque music has shaped his artistic career, approaching fundamental works of the period with sensitivity and stylistic rigor. In 2022, he performed Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, under the batons of Paula Elgueta and Mika Eichenholz, respectively. His debut at the Ópera Nacional de Chile - Teatro Municipal de Santiago came in 2023 as a soloist in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Pedro Pablo Prudencio, receiving critical acclaim for the expressiveness and solidity of her performance.

In 2024, he participated in important projects focused on sacred and Baroque repertoire, including the Chilean premiere of J. S. Bach's St. Mark Passion (modern reconstruction), conducted by Jorge Lavista, J.D. Zelenka's Lamentations of Jeremiah, conducted by Felipe Ramos, and Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, conducted by Gabriel Zepeda. He is also part of the Bach Santiago project, performing soloist in multiple cantatas, conducted by Rodrigo del Pozo and Fernando Cordella. In the same year, he made his debut in the chamber opera La Abeja de Fuego, directed and composed by Andrés Maupoint, at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago, in the co-lead role of Death.

José Andrés Muñoz is one of ten finalists of the Paris Opera Competition 2025. Finals will take place in the French capital, at the Théâtre Marigny, next November.

REVIEWS

"Spanish countertenor José Andrés Muñoz makes a grand debut in the role of Death. He demonstrates clear acting skills, with a good sense of playfulness, and his presence is felt in a varied range of emotions, which neither avoids a fundamentally dark sense of humor nor neglects more noble emotions. Vocally, Muñoz's material seems assured, and he performs with ease and naturalness, revealing himself as a performer with a clear sense of drama and firm musicality."

"José Andrés Muñoz was a surprising countertenor, who replaced the contralto in this version, as is now customary. He has a very beautiful voice, phrases with elegance and is very expressive. He sang with great confidence, and his violin aria, 'Erbarme dich', from the second part, was one of the highlights of the version, due to his total rapport with violinist Richard Biaggini, achieving emotive expressiveness."
