BIOGRAPHY
After successfully graduating from Cologne University of Music in the class of Prof. Peter Runge with a master’s degree in singing, the dark bass Karsten Schröter studied in private lessons and masterclasses with Prof. Dr. Peter Ling, Prof. Edward Randall and Prof. Rudolf Piernay, with whom he continues to take private lessons.
Between 2008 and 2012, as a member of the ensemble at the Theater Hof, Schröter sang roles such as the title role in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Pimen in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov.
Between 2012 and 2018, he joined the ensemble of the Theater Plauen-Zwickau, where he performed Don Basilio in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Landgraf Hermann in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Kaspar in Weber’s Der Freischütz, Mephisto in Gounod’s Faust, Caronte in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Nourabad in Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Abu Hasan/Ali Ebn Bekar in Cornelius’ Der Barbier von Bagdad, Zuniga in Carmen, Baron Weps in Carl Zeller’s Der Vögelhändler and Prince Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Since the 2018-19 season, he has been on a permanent contract at the Theater Trier, singing roles such as the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Sir John Falstaff in Nicolai’s Die Lustige Witwe von Windsor, Coline in Puccini’s La Bohème, the Grande Inquisitor in Verdi’s Don Carlo, Baron von Ochs in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, Baron Zeta in Lehár’s Die Lustige Witwe, Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Zio Bonzo in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, among others.
He has been a guest performer in productions at the Theater Pforzheim, the Landestheater Coburg, the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Staatstheater Saarbrücken.
Forthcoming roles include Arkel in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Swallow in Britten’s Peter Grimes, Father Truelove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress and the Sagrestano in Puccini’s Tosca, all at the Theater Trier.
