BIOGRAPHY
Polish-Spanish soprano Marcelina Román comes from a family of musicians, being a third-generation opera singer. She began her musical education as a cellist and then received her diploma at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, in the class of her mother, Prof. María Czechowska-Królicka. She was also a scholarship holder at the Riga Academy of Music (Prof. Lilija Greidane) and Soroptimist International. In 2018, she completed her PhD degree.
Her professional stage and role debut was as a Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata, under the baton of Andriy Yurkevych. Her acclaimed performance was recompensed by the Jan Kiepura Prize as “Female Debut of the Year”.
Marcelina is a laureate and winner of more than 20 prizes in international competitions such as: Eva Marton International Voice Competition (Hungary), IVC’s-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands), Jāzeps Vītols Vocal Competition (Latvia), Adam Didur Singing Competition (Poland). After her success in the title role of Lully’s Armide, she was named «Operatic Revelation of Year».
Marcelina Román’s operatic repertoire include the roles: Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Elettra in Idomeneo, the title role in Moniuszko’s Halka, Liù in Turandot, Mimi in La Bohème, Micaëla in Carmen, Nedda in Pagliacci, Olympia/Antonia/Giulietta/Stella in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Pauline Viardot in M. Znaniecki’s En Attendant Chopin, Roxana in K. Szymanowski’s King Roger, the title role in Massenet’s Thaïs, Violetta Valery in La Traviata and Leonora in Il Trovatore.
Highlights of Román’s 2022-23 season: Violetta in La Traviata, at the Opera Slaska; an Opera Gala at the Poznan Philharmonic; and Eurydice in Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers, at the Krakow Opera Summer Festival.
In the season 2023-24, she performed the role of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, at the Opera Wroclawska; Nedda in Leocavallo’s I Pagliacci, at the Opera Podlaska; the solo part in Carmina Burana, with Orchestra and Choir of Croatian National Theatre in Split; the solo part in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, at the Berliner Philharmoniker; the solo part in Sibelius’ Finlandia Op. 26, with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra; and the solo part in Mozart’s Vesperae Solennis de Confessore, with the Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, by the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos.
She has performed in opera houses and music halls all over the world, including Argentina, United States of America, Germany, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Croatia, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Ukraine.
Throughout her career, she has worked with several directors, conductors and trainers, such as Esther de Bros, Matthew Epstein, Ricardo Estrada, Marco Evangelisti, Anthony Manoli, Maria Todaro, Reinhard Seehafer, Jörg Peter Weigle, David Wroe and Teresa Żylis-Gara.
